How is the PM role going to evolve with AI?

1. 🟠: Roles of Product, Design, and Engineering is growing bigger, given AI productivity gains, which will naturally mean each role is already and will be taking on more scope in addition to working on more leveraged decisions.

2. 🟣: The intersection between the roles is converging, as PMs are directly prototyping or designing code-ready designs, or a designer building animations directly in web/mobile and more. Which means

a. Handovers/coordination between these roles will need less communication/collaboration (read: fewer meetings on unimportant stuff), which means

b. Across product teams, there will be less overhead / turnarounds, reducing the need for a project manager role / PMO.

c. The engineer for ca ertain kind of products* who is interested or gifted in product thinking can now take on all of the 3 circles.

3. 🟢 : The intersection of all these roles in one role isn't defined or standard yet though there will be a need for it coming as AI becomes better. This will be a super IC role, not a GM type role or a managerial role we see today.

4. Not in the graph yet but clearly Product and Marketing are starting to intersect more for external users/consumers facing PMs that will start to define how these functions change (Marketing Ops already declining, PMM <-> PM morphing- new post coming)

Fast systems propose and innovate, but slow systems hold the power and maintain continuity.

What I take away from this is to know which system you are dealing with, and make peace with the time to a feedback output you can get for your inputs. If you are in a big organization, you can’t change the culture of it, but you can change one tiny process of the team you have influence on, for eg.

I’ve caught myself trying to figure out where to get a shoe online the cheapest but if I am spending more than a couple minutes on it, I know its not making sense anymore, despite the thrill of it, so I’ve resorted to spend a majority of my mindspace and effort in the quadrant of decisions that have high upside and low downside.

We can explain this strategy with a simple equation:

Uncertain Discomfort < Certain Discomfort + Coping Mechanism

In other words, given sufficient coping strategies, people will be willing to tolerate consistent levels of misery for long stretches of time.

Is there anything that can override this? One thing seems to work reliably: wonder.

The equation becomes:

Uncertain Discomfort + Wonder > Certain Discomfort

In thoughts about the future, worry is traded for wonder. People stop thinking about worst‑case scenarios and begin to imagine the benefits of following an uncertain path. They get curious about who they might become if they embrace discomfort and are filled with a sense of urgency that says, “if I don’t do this now, I might regret it.””

Its such a lovely and deceptively leveraged question. It’s easy to convince yourself that things need to be hard, that if you’re not redlining or crushing it or pushing yourself ot the edge, you’re not trying hard enough and the results of your labour wouldn’t be worthy enough. This leads us to look for paths of most resistance, often creating unnecessary hardship in the process.

Content is the piecemealing and packaging of art so that it can be delivered at regular intervals to satisfy the needs of the attention economy. In an era where media is forever abundant, content is what people create to show and remind others that they exist.

Art and content are not synonymous. The purpose of art is to express oneself deeply, while the purpose of content is to garner attention quickly.
